BANK TO UX
Harriet Atherton
What’s your career background?
After studying Economics and Business at university, a natural progression for me was to go and work in corporate banking. Even though there were aspects of the role that I really enjoyed, I was frustrated not seeing the direct impact my work was having on the end user.
What interested you about UX?
I was immediately drawn to UX when I first heard about it. It is the perfect combination of business skills (research, collaboration and communication), creative and design skills, combined with a focus on understanding what is driving a user’s behaviour. Knowing that the end goal is to create great user experiences made me certain that this would be a role that I would be fulfilled in.
What did you like about Valentin as being your UX mentor?
Valentin was always incredibly helpful and shared great insights into the world of a UX designer. I learnt so much in every session with him, not only about design, but also the reality of working as a designer and he really supported me throughout the whole job application process. Without a doubt, his constructive feedback allowed me to improve as a designer.
Did Valentin help you to get a UX role?
Yes, his guidance and support throughout the process was invaluable. He advised me on creating my CV, my portfolio, helped prepare me for interviews, and presenting my portfolio. This was all fundamental in landing a job.
Would you recommend Valentin as a mentor to others?
Yes 100%! Not only was he a massive help in landing a job, but he also brought such positive energy to every session, which really helped to keep me motivated!
